  • I’m new to metal music and don’t want to be a poser

Being a metal head isn’t about anything more than liking metal. Plane and simple.

Some will gate keep the genre and judge you for not knowing some obscure Black metal band that only has 100 monthly followers on Bandcamp…..

These people suck! Don’t buy into what they say and let people listen to what ever they want.

Metal is just meant for everyone and can express any emotion. There are no rules… well there is one. Wear as much black as you can. This rule is dangerous though, as throughout your time spent finding band tees your closet will get darker and darker. That’s fine though cause who gives a fuck?

I digress though. Metal is a fun genre of music to dabble in and find new music literally everyday. Just remember to be yourself and do what’s comfortable to you.

If anything I recommend starting with the basic legends of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

These legends solidified Metal as a genre and made it possible for all of us to enjoy the current state whether we like them or not.

Now if this is still to hard dabble in classic hard rock legends like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. If you need further rock recommendations I’d watch School of Rock Staring metal/rock legend Jack Black.

Now Go have fun and enjoy some metal! Explore Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Bandcamp, and google. There’s so much music out there to go listen to!

  • Dopesmoker by Sleep

Album Review By Bryce Andrade 1/6/2023

This album is one of the purest albums someone could ever listen to. This album has one song entitled Dopesmoker and is an iconic album within the doom metal scene. The face melting fuzz and distorted tone elegantly comes together as one of the best instrumental pieces of all time. If one should ever dabble into the world of doom metal this album should be at the top of every list. Dopesmoker clocks in at a time of one hour three minutes and twenty-nine seconds.

Sleep is a band coming from San Jose, California and consists of bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, guitarists Matt Pike and Justin Marler and drummer Chris Haikus. Sleep is known for being one of the stoners, doom, sludge metal bands out and have been an iconic force to recon with. And in 2022 sleep re-re-released Dopesmoker and as an album with only one track it consistently finds itself as a conversational piece for many metal heads.

The album famously found itself in limbo for years before it finally got released in its original date but the mystic of the album did not take away from the greatness. The original album was released under a different title “Jerusalem” in 1999 but in 2003 the band re-released the record as “Dopesmoker”.

This album is just a piece of art that never fails to keep listeners interested and the riffs that are recorded in this album are amazing to say the at the very least. These tone chasers have perfected what it means to be an artist and every time you listen to this album you hear a wave of sound that is matched by no other band. The uniqueness that is sleep cannot be touched and the power behind their sound keeps listeners coming back.

Sleep is an Iconic band that has stapled itself legendary within the doom community and they are metal gods walking amongst us mortals and will remain to be one of my favorite bands of all time. If you find yourself ever wanting to listen to doom Sleep should be the first band you check out.
