Album Review By Bryce Andrade 1/6/2023
This album is one of the purest albums someone could ever listen to. This album has one song entitled Dopesmoker and is an iconic album within the doom metal scene. The face melting fuzz and distorted tone elegantly comes together as one of the best instrumental pieces of all time. If one should ever dabble into the world of doom metal this album should be at the top of every list. Dopesmoker clocks in at a time of one hour three minutes and twenty-nine seconds.
Sleep is a band coming from San Jose, California and consists of bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, guitarists Matt Pike and Justin Marler and drummer Chris Haikus. Sleep is known for being one of the stoners, doom, sludge metal bands out and have been an iconic force to recon with. And in 2022 sleep re-re-released Dopesmoker and as an album with only one track it consistently finds itself as a conversational piece for many metal heads.
The album famously found itself in limbo for years before it finally got released in its original date but the mystic of the album did not take away from the greatness. The original album was released under a different title “Jerusalem” in 1999 but in 2003 the band re-released the record as “Dopesmoker”.
This album is just a piece of art that never fails to keep listeners interested and the riffs that are recorded in this album are amazing to say the at the very least. These tone chasers have perfected what it means to be an artist and every time you listen to this album you hear a wave of sound that is matched by no other band. The uniqueness that is sleep cannot be touched and the power behind their sound keeps listeners coming back.
Sleep is an Iconic band that has stapled itself legendary within the doom community and they are metal gods walking amongst us mortals and will remain to be one of my favorite bands of all time. If you find yourself ever wanting to listen to doom Sleep should be the first band you check out.
